State of tech, a bit ranty

I know "leaving tech to go into farming" is a meme but also like. I'm genuinely considering it. I fucking hate the direction tech has gone the last decade.

Like, fuck you, your site can be a static page with a POST request, not a 20-tech deep stack.

I think that's the reason I like working with retro tech so much. It's not just slapping together bits of lego like modern web and software dev. You had to be inventive.

There wasn't ROOM for your stupid JavaScript and CSS animation that pinned a CPU to 100% for a few seconds while it calculates the 3000 intermediate shades of grey for some text to fade in just in case the startup is still around when monitors get that fast, because you had to actually think and optimise and only use what you really needed rather than dumping a whole lot of shit in a bundle because "oh it's part of a dependency lol".

You weren't just using some pre-defined library that some fucking corporation owns, you were doing stuff because it was a challenge and interesting and FUN and that's just not in tech anymore.

And like, let's be honest. Most juniors getting into tech nowadays aren't in it for the passion like the old guard tended to be. They're in it because they were promised it'd be good money, the overabundance of them is being exploited the fuck out of, and the lack of passion with all the cookie cutter shit is really showing imo.

I fucking miss it man, there's no wonder in tech anymore. I'll finish my Masters for the extra points on immigration but fuck me, I miss just writing code for fun rather than "oooh it needs to be part of your portfolio oooooh it needs to be super optimised and look good for a FUCKING recruiter oooohhh you didn't use A-fucking-WS here even though you don't FUCKING need it" shit.

I'm gonna just start selling plants and write code for stuff I have fun with instead.
